An Accessible & Inclusive Celebration at The Old Vicarage, Hampshire

Amber and Robin’s story is proof that sometimes love is closer than you think.

“We met in the same block of flats. Robin is my neighbour four doors down.”

After a four-year engagement, the couple took the time to plan a dream wedding that was thoughtfully designed around accessibility, inclusion, and care for themselves, and for their wider community of friends and family.

The couple were keen to fill their wedding with things they love, to let their personalities shine through including Amber’s favourite colour — purple, and their pet cats!

Planning a Wedding with Accessibility at the Heart

Both Amber and Robin have physical disabilities, so from the very beginning they knew their wedding needed to be fully accessible, comfortable and welcoming.

They invited many friends from their assisted living block, which meant considering a wide range of physical needs, choosing suppliers carefully, and ensuring everyone felt supported throughout the day.

“I remember panicking because I didn't know where to start. Luckily my wedding planner was amazing.”

Book Of Love Directory member, Jess Darracott of Wild Soul Weddings, worked with the couples to ensure their entire experience ran smoothly, and calmly whilst also being beautiful.

“Jess knew what she was doing and explained everything clearly. Jess was also very in tune and adapted to my needs.”

Choosing an Accessible Wedding Venue

Choosing the right venue was obviously one of the most important decisions for Amber and Robin.

“I think the most stressful thing about it was making sure everywhere had electric chair access. Not everywhere has that so we had to really look for places and stores that had that in place.”

The couple opted for The Old Vicarage in Christchurch — an idyllic country house setting on the edge of the New Forest. Much of the venue was outdoors and spacious, with ramps and accessible toilets to ensure ease of movement and comfort for everyone. This meant Amber and Robin could focus on enjoying the day, rather than worrying about navigating obstacles.

Bridalwear adapted for Accessibility

Amber’s wedding outfit is a brilliant example of how modern fashion can, and should, adapt to the person who is wearing it.

“My jumpsuit was from Pretty Little Thing and it was altered to add the purple skirt, and so it made it easier for me to access due to being disabled.”

The off-the-rack ivory jumpsuit was split into a two-piece and altered to fit Amber comfortably while seated in her wheelchair, allowing her to use the bathroom independently. A removable lilac lace overskirt was added for a touch of extra prettiness, designed so it could be taken on and off easily for transport, and also tying in perfectly with the couple’s purple colour scheme.

Accessible Wedding Transport

To ensure a seamless (and glamorous) arrival, Amber chose to book a white limousine — something she’d always dreamed of experiencing. A separate taxi transported her wheelchair to the venue, arriving at the same time so she could transition smoothly and without stress.

Even the florals were thoughtfully adapted, with mini bouquets tied to the sides of Amber’s wheelchair using ivory ribbon — a detail that was both practical and beautifully symbolic.

Paws, Purple and Personality

Amber and Robin were clear that their wedding should reflect exactly who they are, and that includes their five beloved cats.

“We had our tables named after our cats. The boards with information on them were cat themed and our cake was cat themed. I think it really makes it your own when you have a theme that related to you as a couple.”

I couldn’t agree more!

Illustrated table plans featured each cat, bringing personality, warmth and a sense of home into the celebration.

Entertainment was a huge part of the day.

“We had garden games and birds of prey at our wedding.”

The ceremony included a playful twist, with the best man ‘forgetting’ the rings — only for an owl to swoop in and save the day. Guests were later able to spend time with the birds during the reception, creating unforgettable memories.

Amber’s favourite part of the day was the ceremony.

“I loved sharing our day with family and friends as witnesses. Even though we were both nervous the birds of prey were amazing and very special.”

Advice for Other Couples Planning an Accessible Wedding

Amber’s advice is clear, practical and deeply felt when it comes to navigating accessibility needs.

“Get a wedding planner! My wedding planner kept me organised, did all the heavy duty stuff and went above and beyond for us.”

Amber and Robin’s wedding is a powerful reminder that when you plan with intention accessible weddings don’t have to be about compromise. Pick the right venue, pick the right planner, and you can design a unique celebration where everyone belongs.
