Meet the Wedding DJs Who Played Their Own Wedding — And Now Do It for Couples Like You

Interview by Ben Woods

There's a version of wedding music that most couples know too well. A DJ who shows up with a hard drive full of the same songs they've been playing since 2009, a script so tight there's no room for the room to breathe, and a dancefloor that empties at 10pm because nobody could find themselves in the music.

And then there's Mr & Mrs L.

Janine and Chris are a married couple and a DJ duo — and crucially, having played their own wedding — they've been exactly where you are, and understand exactly what goes into co-ordinating the perfect musical journey for your day.

I’ve been chatting to them about what they do differently, why most couples underestimate their wedding sound system, and what they'd tell any couple who cares deeply about music but doesn't quite know where to start.

Introduce yourself to our readers and tell them how it all began?

We're Janine and Chris, a married couple totally obsessed with dance music. It's been the soundtrack to our whole story. Here's the ironic bit though: We're two people who love a dancefloor and yet the wedding edition made us feel lost and out of place.

When we got married in Ibiza in September 2024, we wanted to break the mould of what a wedding is expected to be, and music was a huge part of that. Rather than hand one of the most important moments of the night to someone else, we did it ourselves. We pre-mixed the music for our reception drinks and had a live drummer playing over the top of it. Then later, after a live band, we surprised everyone with a secret newlywed back to back set.

We fully expected it to end there. Instead we found loads of couples out there just like us, who take their music as seriously as we do.

We never felt we had to do things the way the wedding industry suggests you should and honestly that's the whole point of us. That night was the moment Mr & Mrs L was born.

How did your own wedding shape the way you approach DJing for other couples?

Playing our own wedding meant we lived every bit of it from your side, so we know the joy of it and the stress of it in equal measure. The running order, the timings, working out how each part of the day flows into the next. We understand a wedding from the inside out, not just from behind the decks.

Is there a first dance, and do we want the whole room flooding the floor the second it ends?

When's the late night food landing?

Are there instrumentalists coming on before us, a sax, a drummer, someone we're handing over from?

Every one of those is a moment, and our job is to read where each one sits in your day and lift it.

But it's not just logistics. We know the worry too, will the room come together, will everyone actually dance. A wedding isn't like anything else, it's its own beautiful thing. You want it to feel like you, with proper energy and proper taste, but you also want every single person you love out there together. We felt all of that on our own night, So when we plan yours, we're not guessing. We've been there.

How would you describe your sound?

Honestly? It's the feeling of your favourite festival. We're house and electronic at heart, that's where we live, but we go way broader than that. Disco, a cheeky pop edit, a sprinkle of tasteful classics. Think the fields of Glastonbury, golden hour in Ibiza, that warm feeling when a tune drops and the whole crowd just goes. Nothing cheesy, nothing on autopilot. Just really good music, played with proper taste, that somehow gets everyone from your festival mates to your nan out there together. That's the magic we're chasing every single time.

What does a full Mr & Mrs L wedding set feel like from start to finish?

We don't think in sets, we think in moments, and each slot has its own intention.

When we're playing a cocktail hour, we're there to set a mood, stripped back, without ever stealing the spotlight.

A closing set is the opposite, we're there to deliver, get people moving and send the night out on a high.

A day two is its own gentle thing, far fewer boxes to tick, the pressure's off.

We let the vibe build slowly, one eye on the sore heads in the room, and this is where we get to dig into the deeper corners of our collection. Whatever the slot, we build everything around the actual shape of your day. We take it up and down on purpose so it never flatlines and never burns out too soon. From the first track to the last, our goal is one thing. The best parties are the ones you never want to end.

How do you build a dancefloor that stays full all night?

By reading people, not just playing a list.

A full floor is all about energy, not just song choice. We're watching the whole time, who's dancing, who's flagging, who's about to drift to the bar, and we respond to it there and then.

The other half is range. If you only know one sound, you lose the room the second that sound stops working. Because we genuinely love so much music, we can hold the room across every generation in it, without ever dropping into the obvious wedding cheese.

And look, we're realistic. Your nan probably isn't closing the night out. Guests peel off when they're ready, that's natural. What we obsess over is that they leave because they've had the best time and they're ready for bed, never because the floor stopped feeling like it was for them. The energy shifts through the night, the crowd changes, the focus changes, and we move with it. That's honestly the bit we live for.

What do you do differently to avoid the usual "wedding playlist on shuffle" feeling?

It starts long before the night itself. We do our research.

We get to know you properly, what you love, what you can't stand, the tracks that mean something and we get a feel for your guests too. A DJ who turns up to play the same set they always play can't match any of that, because it was never built for you in the first place. Your set is the opposite, built bespoke from a proper chat with you first, so it's yours, not a template with your first dance bolted on the front.

Then on the night it's all live.

We mix in real time, we read the room, every transition is a decision. We pay real attention to the mixing itself too, no awkward silences, no dead air between tracks. It's harder than it looks to keep that seamless all night and it's something we care a lot about. It's a lot of work behind the scenes, but it's the difference between a nice party and a night nobody stops talking about.

How do you balance your own style with what a couple and their guests want?

Once we know what you love, the real skill is in the balance. Your taste always leads. Our job is to take it somewhere, reading the room on the night so your must-haves land at the right moment rather than just getting ticked off a list. We're opinionated on the music, but always from a place of wanting to get the very best out of your day.

This is a labour of love for us, not a numbers game, so we only take on weddings we know we're genuinely aligned with. If we're not the perfect musical fit, we'll say so and point you towards someone who is. The best weddings we've played are the ones where a couple trusted us with their vision and we made it bigger than they'd imagined.

What are the biggest mistakes couples make when it comes to wedding music?

The biggest one is underestimating the gear. You can have the perfect music for the perfect crowd, but on the wrong sound system it'll never hit the way you imagined it.

That feeling you get at a festival or a proper venue, that's the system as much as the songs, and it's the first thing people forget to think about. Close behind is over-controlling it, handing over a rigid hour by hour playlist with no room to breathe. A locked set can't respond to a floor that's actually living, so the best thing you can do is trust the people you've booked to read the night.

And the last one is forgetting who you're entertaining. It's your day and the two of you matter most, of course, but a track that means the world to you doesn't always move a floor full of your nearest and dearest, and judging that balance is a big part of what we're there for.

Mr and Mrs L are DJing together at a wedding. There are disco balls on the mixing desk.

What advice would you give to couples who care deeply about music but don't know where to start?

Start with the feeling, not a giant song list.

Don't sit there trying to name two hundred tracks, it's overwhelming and it's not where the magic is. Instead think about the moments and the energy you want. The festivals, the gigs, the nights out that actually meant something to you as a couple, that's where your shared taste already lives, so start there. Bring us those and we'll build out from them. You really don't need to have it all figured out, that's our job.

If you were to renew your vows and could book anyone in the world to DJ for your wedding, who would it be?

If we were to hand over the decks it'd be DJ Tennis. He used to be a wedding DJ, so he gets the occasion, but his sets are always unpredictable. Broad, brilliantly selected, full of originality, the kind of set where tracks you love come back reimagined into something you didn't see coming. That's the dream really. A night that surprises everyone in the room and ends with every single person wishing it didn't have to.

If you're the kind of couple for whom the music isn't an afterthought — it's the whole point — then Janine and Chris are worth knowing about. The bit that gets me most is their honesty: If they don't think they're the right DJs for your day, they'll tell you straight and point you to someone who is. In an industry where it's tempting to take on any booking that lands in your inbox, that kind of selectivity is actually a good sign. It means when they show up for your day, they're all in.
